How to Get Married in SF

1. Get a Marriage License

Make an appointment with the San Francisco County Clerk to apply for and pay for a marriage license.

Both parties must BOTH appear at the appointment to apply for the license. 

Both parties must also provide valid photo IDs and any information about previous marriages.

2. Hold the Ceremony

The marriage license MUST be obtained PRIOR to the ceremony for the ceremony to be valid. 

The ceremony must be held within 90 days of when the license was obtained.

At least one witness must sign the license for a public marriage.

3. Return the License

The person performing the ceremony must return the license to the Assessor-Recorder’s office within 10 days of the ceremony.
